<This is a contributed post> One of the best things about human beings as a species is that we’ve taken something as essential to our survival as food and managed to turn it into something so much more than that. Food isn’t just something we need, it’s something we can enjoy, a way to connect with other people, and a way to express our own individual perspectives. Of course, that might not be how you see food. If you find that your relationship with food isn’t particularly positive, here are a few simple things to try.
One of the best ways to improve your relationship with food is to try and adjust the way that you think about it. Rather than thinking of meals as an obligation, try to find ways to think of them as a treat and an excuse to enjoy yourself. This can be something like going out for a nice meal from time to time so you can enjoy food without having to cook, or taking a break from the stress of the day to enjoy an afternoon tea. In fact, the history of how the afternoon tea was invented was built around taking some time in the afternoon to sit and enjoy time with friends! Turning food into time for yourself and the people you care about is one of the best ways to start thinking about it differently.
Listen to your body
A lot of the time people find themselves with a less than ideal relationship with food because, counterintuitively, they’re not listening to their body. The reality is that your body will likely tell you what it does or doesn’t want. If you’re finding meal times to be a not particularly enjoyable time, it’s worth paying attention to why that might be and trying to identify the cause. It might be that you simply don’t like certain foods or there might be some kind of underlying health issue that’s impacting your diet. Listening to your body and understanding what it is can help you solve whatever issue there might be.
Get out of your comfort zone
For many people, the issue with food is that it’s just become rather boring for them. If that’s something that you’re experiencing, something that you might want to try is getting out of your comfort zone and trying new things that you might otherwise have passed over without thinking. New experiences are almost always valuable and at the very least they can give you a better idea what you do and don’t really enjoy when it comes to food.
Of course, if you find that your relationship with food is something that’s actually starting to worry you then it’s always worth talking to a professional about it. You should always consult your doctor if you’re looking to make any massive changes to your diet. But if you’re just trying to make food into something more than just a way to get the energy you need and turn it into something that you can really enjoy, there are a whole lot of ways to do that. There’s a whole culinary world out there waiting for you to explore it!
